What I'm doing between questions: collection development

6:00 in the children's room
  • How to print in color
  • Pay to print
  • Headphones returned
  • Can't get online [...cuz you owe $11 in fines]
  • Pay to print
  • Needs the headphones back after all

7:00
  • Finish up proctoring a test
  • Test dude wants programming books
  • The Lost Boy [popular title for several books, but she wants the Pelzer one, of course]
  • Reset time [srsly? we're only open another half hour...ok, then]

  1. I will never, never, never understand the abiding interest in the P#ltz#r book. I swear we've replaced that 10 times - not counting its large print, book on tape/CD, Spanish, young adult, juvenile, and all other iterations.

  2. It's shock value, the same thing that makes Jerry Springer et al. popular: "as fucked-up as my life is, at least it isn't THAT bad!" It's also written at about a 5th grade level, so kids can understand it, and I think a lot of kids--the patron this day was a teen--can relate to being (or feeling) poorly treated by grown-ups in their lives.

Have you read it? It reads a lot like our visits to our friends' house about 10 years ago. :(
